If you only try one massage in Bali, most locals will tell you to make it a Balinese massage. It is the island’s own style, passed down in families and villages long before spas lined the streets of Canggu.

What it feels like

A Balinese massage mixes long, flowing strokes with palm and thumb pressure and slow, gentle stretches. The rhythm is unhurried. Your therapist works through the back, shoulders, arms, legs and feet, using warm oil so every movement glides.

It sits in the middle of the pressure scale: firmer than a light relaxation massage, softer than a deep sport massage. You can always ask for more or less.

Slow hands, warm oil and an hour where nothing is asked of you.

Who it suits

It is a lovely first massage if you are new to spas, and a good reset after travel, long days on a scooter or a week of sightseeing. If you want something deeper for sore muscles, look at our Sport or Mix Therapy instead.

Before you go

Arrive a few minutes early, tell your therapist about any areas to avoid, and drink water afterwards. Then give yourself a slow evening if you can. That is half the magic.
